Tommaso Calabro is pleased to participate to Asia NOW art fair in Paris with a monographic booth dedicated to the Japanese artist Tiger Tateishi (1941-1998), one of the most eclectic figures in the Milanese and international art scene of the second half of the last century.
A painter, mangaka, illustrator and ceramist, Tiger Tateishi was a multifaceted and charismatic artist. Tateishi had the ability to rework and converge the symbols of Asian culture, both Japanese and Chinese, into a syncretic universe, incorporating Western artistic influences that deeply fascinated him, such as Pop Art, Anti-Art, Cubism, Surrealism and Metaphysical art.
Drawing on the exhibition Tiger Tateishi held at its Milan gallery in early 2024, Tommaso Calabro’s presentation at Asia NOW includes a selection of works on paper and paintings produced from 1969 to 1975, during the artist’s stay in Milan and his travels in Europe.
Our presentation features iconic paintings by the artist: large and medium format canvases, where images follow one another as in a comic book, each image opening up a variety of possible meanings. The selection of drawings focuses on the imagery of the tiger, the Maoist animal symbolizing a rampant imagination, after which the artist renamed himself.
